I was so sad to learn of Mary's passing. I was a library supervisor at Bird Library from 1998-2007, and had the great privilege of knowing Mary during my time there. She was such a lovely person, indeed passionate about SU's Archives and her wolfhounds. The tribute you've written for her is brilliant. I hope that your memories will bring you solace at this difficult time.

Mary and I worked together at the Syracuse University Archives for 20 years. She was my friend, one of the best friends I have ever had. I am heartbroken at the loss I feel. She had so much more to give all of us.
When my wife and I drove back to Syracuse from Massachusetts for her service I realized suddenly that Syracuse now seemed empty to me. Mary was no longer in it.

I am sorry to hear Mary was struggling with an illness, and has lost the battle. It was always fun to see her and Magaret pass our house on Barnes Ave with the Magnificent Hounds! Our condolences go out to Mickey, Marty, Margaret, and the rest of the family. Ed Seiter

I had planned to attend calling hours for Mary but car troubles prohibited me from doing so.I regret that. I remember Mary's helpfulness throughout the years. She always answered queries quickly and thoroughly and had so much information at her finger tips. She was gracious and enthusiastic about both her work and her other passions- her family, her dogs and her quilt making. The latter passion consisted of such beautiful and competent work. When I see quilts I will think of her warmly.

I have only fond memories of Mary from working with her at Bird for several years, and later as a resource for Special Collections and Archives while I was at SUNY. I still have the baby quilt she made for my son- a gift from the technical services department in 1982. Mary was a treasure and is sadly missed.

Peg and family. I was so sorry to read of Mary's passing. Please know my heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you all. It was a joy to know Mary, and Peg. The two of you always made the day for me when you walked into the Red Cross donation center. I don't think I ever saw either of you in a bad mood. Thank you for all the help you both gave to so many patients in the CNY area. Blessings to your family.

As I read Mary's obituary, the tears flowed. Some were of sadness, but most were of joy because I was lucky to have known Mary. I laughed out loud about her material and smiled broadly remembering those wonderful Irish Wolfhounds. I flashed back to the IWCA National Specialty in Newport , R.I. many years ago and making the trip with Mary & Peg and 'Essymaymay'. And the St. Patrick Day Parades and marching with our dogs. And the times when the twins made chocolate chip cookies for our Wolfhound get togethers and made a special batch for me without nuts! So many wonderful memories to cherish. How blessed I am to have known Mary.

Mary was an incredibly warm and kind and amazingly generous person with a delightful sense of humor. I was truly grateful to have her as a colleague at the Syracuse University Libraries and always appreciated her assistance with reference questions about Syracuse University history, a subject of which she had unparalleled command. Have really missed Mary since her retirement, and am very glad to have a special memento, a baby quilt that Mary made for my son, which I hope to pass down to a new generation.

Life is like a journey
of sweetness and sorrow,
Of yesterday's memories
and hopes for tomorrow,
Of pathways we choose
And detours we face
with patience and humor,
courage and grace.
Of Joy's that we've shared
and of people we've met
Who have touched us in ways
we will never forget.
Mary, you will never be forgotten. Love, Wayne and June Cavanaugh

So sorry to learn of Mary's death. She was a very talented and hard working woman possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of anything she was interested in, whether it was quilting and fabrics, Shakespeare or the wonderful wolfhounds. It is a fortunate gang of hounds waiting for Mary on that Rainbow Bridge we pet lovers all believe awaits us after we've left this life behind. Mary, may the road rise to greet you, may the wind be always at your back, the sun shine warm upon your face, and until we meet again may the Goddess hold you in the palm of her hand.

Margaret and the family,
My sincere sympathy to you all. I worked with Mary at SU Library. She was always so kind and cheerful. I know others were closer to her, but I will always remember her. And I was the recipient of one of those Positively Pink pillows and still use it. I learned so much about her from her obituary. She was truly an outstanding woman. God's blessings to all of you.

Mary was my colleague on the sixth floor of E. S. Bird Library for eighteen years. She was a cheerful, friendly person, and we had many conversations, especially about dogs. She was a dedicated and highly competent professional. She was always willing to help researchers, and to answer questions about Syracuse University history and its archives, which she knew more about than anyone else. I was saddened that her departure from the library was apparently so "quiet" and without celebration because people like Mary make the difference between a bland bureaucracy and a destination that is actually attractive to seekers of knowledge. So, Mary, I celebrate your 43 years of service to the library and your kindness to humans and wolfhounds.

To Margaret, and the family of Mary O'Brien....I am so sorry to hear of Mary's death. She was the Archives, she and I managed to run the place for so many years and I have so many memories, too many to elaborate on here. I don't think I will be able to attend the service since I am not in the best of health, but my heart is with you. Amy Doherty
