Obituary of Dr. Carl J. Vonden Steinen

Dr. Carl J. Vonden Steinen, 59, of LaFayette, NY, passed away on October 26, 2019 at Francis House in Syracuse after a courageous three-year battle against esophageal cancer.  His plea to anyone who suffers from persistent heartburn and acid reflux:  make an appointment to see your doctor, today!

Born in Mount Holly, NJ, Carl grew up in the Philadelphia, PA area where he developed a lifelong devotion to Phillies baseball.  He graduated from St. Clair High School in Schuylkill County, PA in 1978, and then earned a BS in Psychology from the University of Scranton, an MA in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) from Florida Institute of Technology.  He moved to Syracuse in 1988 for a one-year doctoral internship at the Veterans Administration Hospital, and liked Central New York so much that he never left.  From 1989 to 1995, Carl served as a staff psychologist at the Cayuga County Community Mental Health Center in Auburn, NY.  In 1995, he joined the Center for Youth Services (CYS) Children and Adolescent Inpatient Unit at Hutchings Psychiatric Center in Syracuse, where everyone knew him as “Dr. Von”, and from where he retired a few weeks ago at the rank of Licensed Psychologist.  Away from work, Carl enjoyed spending time with family and friends, travelling, listening to music of many genres, watching movies, and being politically active as well as a fan of the Phillies, Green Bay Packers, and Bruce Springsteen.  He was a member of St. Lucy’s Church, and the St. Andrew the Apostle community.  Carl is survived by his wife of 22 years, Anne Mosher, and children Meghan and Matthew Vonden Steinen.  His parents Clinton J. and Anna Marie (Smith) Vonden Steinen preceded him in eternal life.      

Calling hours will be held 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 1^st 2019 at St Lucy’s Church, 432 Gifford Street, Syracuse, NY.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 2^nd 2019 also at St. Lucy’s. Burial will be private.
