Ode to Andy From His Big Sister
62 years ago in late December
A baby was born on a day I remember.
I was witness to all his firsts
His walking and talking, his toddler outbursts.
I wiped his bottom, his wounds I nursed
I loved him at his best, I taunted him at his worst.
The move to Ruskin was a life changing event,
The sheer volume of kids outnumbered adults.
Reillys, Woods, Hartnets, Murphys,
Tormeys, Hoffmans, McMahons and McDermotts
Put them together and what did we get?
A gaggle of children in a feral pack!
He gathered many friends over years interlocking
His Gumbas and River Rat buddies all came a-knocking.
The stories, recollections, jokes and adventures,
All on our hearts as we grieve his departure.
A perennial student, though never liked to write,
His curiosity and his humor were his inherited birthright.
He could light up a room, provoke a discussion,
Stubborn as hell, giving little concession.
His family, so precious, his most brilliant masterstroke,
We’re a banquet of flavors, a rainbow-colored cloak.
We’re brothers and sister, daughters and lover,
In-laws and out-laws, are there more to discover?
We’re offshoots and successors with shared DNA
Out of Africa through Europe to the good old USA.
Handy Andy was a gentle giant with soft bule eyes,
He cultivated bigness of heart and tireless enterprise.
On this day, as we gather to remember
Our very fine friend and fellow traveler,
Our sadness is present, our hearts are broken,
So much to recall, so much to harken.
Someday, I know, as grief moves through stages,
The ache and the pain will change with the seasons.
I’ll welcome with joy and monumental gratitude
For the family we shared, for our love and its magnitude.
You’ll visit my heart with each shining day
To give me a smile, that brightens my way.

I will forever be grateful to Andy in many ways. Our neighborhood growing up was filled with fun and laughter. Ruskin alone was a hot spot for making friends. I am Patrick’s age, Andy being a couple years older, would fill a big brother role. As we all grew up and started our own families, moved away then moved back, I’d see Andy and he would have a big hug to share. I’ll miss that smile of his when we would reminisce about the good old days in the Stolp Strathmore area.
I pray for God to heal the pain in our hearts. Andy’s heart is pain free now, pray for the family and his beautiful wife Linda.
