Obituary of Edward "Al" Kissane
Edward “Al” Kissane was born in Bansha, County Tipperary on the 1st of May, 1928. Al passed away peacefully at his home on March 16th, 2025. He emigrated to the United States in 1956 for his brother John’s wedding. Al settled in Syracuse where his uncle, Father Edward Kissane served as pastor at St. Michael’s parish. Along with his brothers and sister that were here, he quickly found the large and engaged Irish community in Syracuse including the Ancient Order of Hibernians. It was here where he met his wife of 61 years, Phyllis (nee Quinn). He worked for decades as an electrician, retiring from the City of Syracuse.
Along with his many trips back “home” to Ireland, Al also loved travelling to Cape Cod, Boston, Pittsburgh and Rehoboth Beach, where he was always welcomed by his in-laws.
For years Al was involved in several organizations, including Irish Northern Aid, supporting the reunification of Ireland, which he was passionate about. He was also a member of the Irish Cultural Society and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid reader, loved his crosswords, but spent most of his free time doing handiwork for anyone that would have him, especially at his daughter’s home, which had an unending list of jobs for him to do. In his day, he played hurling and Gaelic football, and played golf through last year. And was planning on watching Rory McElroy play in The Players Championship. Obviously, Rory got a bit of Irish luck from Al for the long-awaited W.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, daughter, Deirdre, son-in-law, Todd, and his three adoring grandchildren, whom he cherished and who affectionately called him "Hiya," Eamonn, Declan and Mairead. He is also survived by brothers, John and Matt, sisters, Eileen, Rita and Kathleen, brother-in-law, Kevin Quinn, and dozens of wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Dermot, Tim, Finbar and sister, Mary, and an infant son, Robert.
Calling hours will be held at St. Michael’s Church from 9:30-11am, with funeral mass to follow on Friday, March 21st. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dewitt.
