Obituary of Natalie R. Sweeny

Natalie Rose Sweeny, 89, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 22, 2025. Natalie and her twin sister, Nancy were born on June 2, 1935, to the late Joseph F. and Florence Lyons Sweeny. Natalie and Nancy were inseparable, identical twins who were lifelong residents of the Valley Section, often seen shopping at Green Hills, dinning at Lugi’s or Danzers or stopping in at their favorite ice cream parlor, Gannon’s. Due to their striking red hair and identical features they were commonly referred to simply as “The Twins.”

Natalie graduated from the Onondaga Valley Academy in 1953 and shortly thereafter began her career at Crouse Hinds, retiring after 33+ years. Natalie enjoyed golfing and traveling, often with the Our Lady of Lourdes Church travel group, volunteering at the rectory and at the Lenten fish fry. Natalie was the favorite babysitter/playmate to her great niece & nephews Brianna, Brandon and Joseph and was always in attendance at every special event that they had.

Natalie is predeceased by her parents and siblings; Jack, Robert, Jane Mager, Joanne Newkirk and Nancy.

Natalie is survived by her nephew, Joseph (Kelli) Sweeny and their children, Brandon, Brianna and Joseph (Ali) as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews and great, great nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 28, at 10:45 am at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. A calling hour will be from 10-10:45am prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt.
