Here is a typical story Brendan and I shared: At the AOH, people would request funds for various causes to consider and vote on. It was the first night for a round of new requests listed under— "The First Annuals." After several rounds without selecting a recipient, one committee member stood and said," Why don't we just give the group what we gave them last year!

In life, Brendan, was the Genuine Article, the real McCoy. He was always pulling me aside, where in a low voice he'd share his latest joke or story as he attempted to hide a smile or laugh, but never could. His wife Mary's family, McCarthy's from Ireland lived across from the O'Neills on Whittier Avenue. Mary and my sister, Mary, were in the same class at St.Pat's. Mrs. O'Neill often left messages on the fridge door for Bobby O'Neil to hide the cookies when I visited the house.
At one time there were five McCarthy families on Whittier with father's named John McCarthy. We received one others mail and after opening the mail knew their business as well. In the '50s and 60s, there were over 100 children on our block from Burnet Park Drive to Avery Avenue.
School days, we streamed from home to assemble class by class in St. Patrick's School yard before marching inside the school.

Dear Brendan,
The room was always brighter and full of laughter when you were in it. When you began telling one of your many famous stories, all ears were listening. I am very lucky to have had you in my life. Our families were very much just one family. Thank you for being one of the many men that I considered as a father figure. Thank you for being such a staunch supporter of my Gaelic Football days.
