Edward P. Murphy, Jr. Obituary

Edward P. Murphy, Jr. passed away on May 21 at his home in Fairfax, Virginia. Edward, or Pat, as he was known to many, was born in the Tipperary Hill neighborhood of Syracuse, NY. Pat graduated from St. Patrick’s High School and Clarkson University with a Bachelor of Business Administration for Accounting. He was recruited by Brooklyn Union Gas, and following graduation, served in varying roles for over 30 years, ultimately reaching Vice President. He then served as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Long Island Power Authority before retiring. Pat spent nearly 30 years living on Long Island, and once retired, dove headfirst into the “snowbird” life, splitting his time for many years between Bradenton, FL and Inlet, NY before permanently moving to Fairfax, VA to be near family.

Pat was predeceased by his parents Edward P. Murphy and Rosemary M Murphy, his brother Mark D. Murphy, his Aunt Katherine Murphy and Uncles Msgr. James McCloskey and Charles McCloskey, and his sister-in-law Sandra Murphy (Mike).

Pat is survived by his wife Barbara of nearly 50 years, his three children Patrick (Julia), Kevin, and Meghan (Brian) Rice, and two beautiful grandchildren, Brendan and Adalyn. He is also survived by his siblings: Michael, James (Mary), sister-in-law Marie Murphy, Rosemary Barry (John), and Kay Magnarelli (David), and many nieces and nephews.

Pat was known for his great love of family, golf, poker, and all things Irish, and took great pleasure in reminiscing about his childhood on Bryant and Whittier Avenues. In his words, his only two dislikes were filberts nuts and bourbon. "But in a pinch, I'll take bourbon." Pat always had a saying, phrase, or quip that would offer guidance, wisdom, or a well-needed laugh. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A private celebration of life will be held in Syracuse later this year. Donations can be made to St. Patrick's & St. Brigid's Parish, 216 North Lowell Ave., Tipperary Hill, Syracuse, NY, 13204.
