Laura M. Smith, 92, of Fairmount, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025 with her daughter, Lori Ann by her side. Laura was born in Martinsburg, NY on March 11, 1933 to the late Floyd and Hilda Millard. She graduated from Lowville Academy before going on to Morrisville, where she earned her licensed practical nursing degree. Laura had a long career in nursing and retired from Community General Hospital after 46 years in the labor and delivery department. She enjoyed spending summers at the family camp in Stony Point, Henderson Harbor, traveling with friends to the Carolinas, and spending time with her family.
Laura was predeceased by her husband, Teddy O. Smith, and son, Ronnie P. Smith, brothers, Harold and Glenn Millard.
She is survived by her children, Renee Hepp, Daniel Smith, and Lori (Glenn) Hotaling, and her grandchildren, Emily (Mike), Jeff (Paige), Matt, Kim, Chad, and Lindsay, sister-in-law, Sylvia Millard, several great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Laura’s one wish was to see two more great granddaughters born in June and spend time with them. She fought hard, and was able to meet them and see how they carry the strong will and fight she had.
Lori wishes to express her gratitude to Liz Cioppa, Alice Clerkin, Donna Genson, Marcia and Terry Scaia, and Grace White for defining the meaning of friendship. Your commitment and loyalty to her mother was unmatched. Lori also wants to thank Gretchen Mulcahey. “The labor of love, care, and compassion she poured over my mom, myself, children, and grandchildren was beyond measure.”
Private services will be held.
