Frederick W. Smith Sr. passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside on September 3, 2025.  He retired from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department as a Captain with over 30 years of service and served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1966.

Fred, also known as Papa, was an avid sports fan who loved SU football and the NY Yankees and Giants.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, Fish Friday's at Velasko Deli and breakfast dates at Nestico's with his grandkids. 

Fred was predeceased by Mabel Smith Cotter (mother), Schuyler C. Smith (father), and Linda Loysen Smith (wife). He is survived by his sister, Sally Smith Weeks, brother, Joseph Cotter (Karen), his children, Christopher (Heidi), Dawn, Frederick Jr, and Matthew (Katie) as well as his stepdaughters, Susan and Paula Loysen, his 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Friends and family may call between 10:30 am-12:30 pm at Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave, Syracuse, NY 13219 on Tuesday, Septemeber 9, 2025.

Burial will be immediately following at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 4069 Howlett Hill Rd, Syracuse, NY 13215.
