George Giehl Evertz Obituary

George Giehl Evertz, born April 21, 1931, in Syracuse, New York, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 94. George lived a life defined by service, dedication, and love for family and friends. He graduated from Manlius Military School in 1948 and earned an ROTC scholarship to Syracuse University, where he graduated in 1952 with a degree in accounting. Following his education, George fulfilled his ROTC Air Force active duty commitment as a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, serving as an Air Defense Controller at the Air Defense Command Radar Station in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Upon completing his military service, George returned to Syracuse and promptly married Sally Hogan, beginning a lifelong partnership. He became the owner of the family business, Dotter and Becker Hardware, which he operated for 15 years. After selling the business, George joined the New York State Retail Hardware Association, where he shared his retail experience and extensive accounting knowledge with small business owners across the state. For decades, George also provided accounting services to numerous clients, handling their financial transactions and tax returns with care and precision.

Outside of work, George cherished time spent at Oneida and Skaneateles Lakes, enjoying floating in a tube for long stretches and engaging in spirited croquet matches with family and friends. George also had a lifelong fascination with trains and found great joy in filling the house with the tunes from the many rolls on his player piano. If you spent any time with George, you quickly discovered his love for storytelling. He delighted in sharing his life experiences in vivid detail with anyone who would listen. These stories will remain treasured memories for all who heard them.

George was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Jennie Evertz, his brother, Emil Evertz Jr., and his beloved wife, Sally Hogan Evertz.

He is survived by their five children: Charlene McGraw (Edward), Johanna Higham (Eric), George T. Evertz (Michele), Sara Evertz (Jim McCarthy), and Laurie LeFever (Neil). He was a proud grandfather to Katherine McCook, Samantha Connell, Erin Kaufmann, Mark Evertz, Elizabeth LaRochelle, Chad Evertz, Emily Cummo, Jenny Panella, Jessica Higham, Kelley Crawford, Ian LeFever, Noah LeFever, Jacob LeFever, and Zoe LeFever, and great-grandfather to 13 wonderful great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Elderwood at Liverpool and all those who provided compassionate care and support.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 27, at 10am at St. Francis Xavier Church, Marcellus, NY. An hour of calling hours will be held prior from 9 to 10am at church.
