Edward V Verstraete, 73, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026 at Francis House after a courageous health battle.
Born to Nancy and Vincent Verstraete on March 10, 1952. He attended Corcoran High School, Class of 1970. Edward retired from Niagara Mohawk/National Grid in 2008 after 34 years of working in the Gas and Learning/Development Departments.
Edward was a fan of the New York Yankees and Syracuse University Basketball teams. Also, he enjoyed following his grandson’s basketball and baseball teams. At the games, he was well known because he wore a t-shirt that proudly stated, “#1 Papa”. He was an avid garage sale chaser and didn’t miss many.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Catherine (Katie) Mannion of Syracuse; his daughter, Kelly (Michael) Landau of Camillus; his son, Edward P. Verstraete of Syracuse; his two grandsons, Matthew and Jack Landau; and his sisters, Janette Verstraete, Jane (Don) Johnson, Nancy (Randy) Flath and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 9th at Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home in Syracuse from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 10th at 10am at St. Patrick’s/St. Brigid’s Church, Syracuse. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt.
