He was a Professor in Cultural Foundations of Education (Sociology of Education) Syracuse University. I was a graduate student in the Philosophy of Education program there 1973-76. He was very kind and was known to go out of his way to mentor students. Tom Green was then Chairman of the Department and Art Grisham was my Advisor. I remember great parties at his home in Skaneateles. It was a huge red house right on the corner of the Main Street in Skaneateles. I remember him fondly. He was a great guy and everyone loved him. Very few Professors threw parties in those days or if they did, they didn't invite graduate students. My sincere condolences.

My sympathy to my cousin Judy and the family. Jerry was a brilliant teacher and writer. I have several of his books and enjoyed reading them. The educational questions he raised are still valid today. Long ago, we both wrote for THE WASHINGTON POST at the same time, the 1960's.

Whenever I saw Jerry, I knew what to expect: an enthusiastic and welcoming warmth; an embrace that was spiritual, intellectual, and physical. There was a constancy to his presence, whatever the circumstances of his life. Peace to his family.

To the family of Jerry Grant,
I was just getting to know Jerry and through his writing, his family. We shared an ever so brief moment as colleagues in the Tarpon Spring Writer's Group where he helped me become a better wordsmith. The legacy of his stories will always be with you to help keep him in your heart. Jerry and all of his family remain my prayers, he is with you always.

John and I are so sorry about Jerry’s death. Many years ago when I was a new faculty member, Jerry was my department chair. He was extraordinarily kind and helpful to me. He coauthored a paper with me, gave me other opportunities, and shepherded me through the tenure process. I owe my academic career to his mentoring. Through the years, as my friend, he checked in frequently on how I was doing. As others have said, he was funny, creative, and larger than life. I’ll miss seeing him riding his bicycle through our neighborhood and “holding court” at the cafe in our local grocery store. Our condolences to Judy and the Grant family.

I still cannot believe the news about Jerry's passing. Just a couple of days ago I was still talking with a friend about him, about our trip together to the rural school in China. Jerry was a wonderful mentor and part of my best experiences and memories in the US. It was my great fortune to have Jerry as the supervisor of my graduate study. I will always miss him. May he rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. He was an incredible mentor to me while I was a student at SU. I was his teaching assistant for two years and, during that time, learned how to reflect on my teaching in the service of students. I loved listening to his stories about his time as a journalist as well as an educator/researcher. I admired his boundless curiosity and laid back personality. My thoughts are with his family. Rest in power.

Jerry was a man who left an imprint on people. In the Tarpon Writers' Group his imprint was made both in what he wrote and read and in his critiques of what others wrote. I was much affected by his views on life, education and urban dynamics. I knew him just long enough to consider him a friend, but that was not nearly long enough.

For 46 years we have relished the company of Jerry and Judy and their wonderful offspring. A national leader in the field of educational sociology, Jerry and David Riesman inspired so many educators-including us- with their studies of educational reform movements. We will miss him tremendously as a person, a friend, a father, and as a member of two or three of our most beloved couples.
