Obituary of James "Barry" Kennedy

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James "Jim" Barrington Kennedy, known to his loved ones as Barry, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital on November 12, 2023, at the age of 76. He was born on February 25, 1947, in Syracuse, NY, to his late parents, James and Barbara Kennedy.

He was a graduate of Blodgett Vocational High School.  In May 1971, he married Mary A. Drake, and together they raised their three children, Missi, Carrie and Barry. He was a member of the IBEW Local 43. As the founder and owner of BeKen Contracting, Barry dedicated his career to building a successful business. His dedication and passion were evident in every project he undertook.

Barry was a loving and hardworking individual who touched the lives of many.  Nothing made him happier than watching his kids and grandchildren in their sports and encouraging them in school. Whether it was gymnastics, basketball, football, lacrosse, softball, swimming or soccer, he was their biggest fan. He was so proud of how all of them did in school and was proud of all their successes.  Barry coached biddy basketball for many years at Marcellus Elementary School. He was a lifelong member of Tuscarora Golf Course. He found solace on the golf course, where he could unwind and connect with friends who shared his love for the sport. Barry loved spending time with Mary and going out with their friends. He was an active member of the Morning Star Lodge #524 for many years, where he was elevated to the position of Worshipful Master.

Barry leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is preceded in death by his father, James, and mother, Barbara.  He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Mary, his 3 children, Melissa Kennedy, Carrie (Edward) Rydelek and Barry (Michelle) Kennedy, his 5 grandchildren, Avery Rydelek, Alexcis Rydelek, Ashlyn Milani, Marielle Kennedy and Patrick Kennedy, his brothers, Bill Kennedy and Bob Kennedy, his sister, Cindy Kennedy and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Avenue, Syracuse NY on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 3-6pm.  A funeral service will be held at Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home on November 21, 2023 at 10am followed by a graveside service at Highland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the CNY Food Bank foodbankcny.org or the EOD Warrior Foundation eodwarriorfoundation.org. These organizations were close to his heart, and any contributions made in his memory would be greatly appreciated. The loss of Barry has left a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
