Obituary of Edward Francis Phelan

Edward Francis Phelan Sr. 84 of Syracuse, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on January 19, 2014. He retired after 32 years with the United States Postal Service as Postmaster of Camillus, NY. Ed was a past president and life member of the Taunton Volunteer Fire Department. He was an active member of St. Ann's Parish, Syracuse, NY where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He started the funeral adult servers program at the church. After his retirement he enjoyed volunteering with the Taunton Volunteer Fire Department and St. Ann's Church. His greatest joy came from spending time and attending events with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He survived by his wife of 57 years Joan Viola (Barthel). He is survived by his children Mary Phelan, John (Mary) Phelan, Edward (Kathy) Phelan and Joanne (Mark) Chilton. His grandchildren Carrie (Jeff Snyder) and David Flewelling, James Abert, Melissa (Scott) Kowalewski, Kevin Phelan, Christina, Mike and Joe Phelan, Becki and Dan Chilton. Great-grandchildren Anthony, Victoria and Audriana. Brother Jim (Anne) of Lake Havasu, AZ, Sisters Betty Phelan, Ellen Kirsch and Clara Pfrang and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Services will be held Wednesday, January 22nd at 10:00 am at St. Ann's Church on Onondaga Blvd. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, January 21st from 4 to 7 pm at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. The family would like to thank the staff at University Hospital's Upstate and Community Campus's for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Taunton Volunteer Fire Department, 4300 Onondaga Blvd., Syracuse, NY 13219.
