Kathryn McCarthy Carey, our beloved Gamma, died peacefully at the age of 106, surrounded by loved ones, on January 14, 2015. Born on Sept. 6, 1908, Kathryn survived two cancers. She loved to dance, garden, social gatherings, and was an avid reader. Her secret to a long life, "Always have dessert and make sure it's chocolate!" She worked 22 years at Melvin and Melvin and volunteered at the House of Providence and Community Hospital. She is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Johanna McCarthy, sister, Marian, brothers, James Howard and Jack, her husband, John, infant son, Joseph, grandson, Eric Bobrow and son-in-law, John T. Kelley. She is survived by her children, Noreen Kelley, Rev. James H. Carey, Kathleen Black (William), grandchildren, Shawn (Teererat) Kelley, Noreen Riordan, Shannon Kelley, Meghan Kelley, great grandchildren, Molly and Emily Riordan, sister-in-law, Mary Leona McCarthy, one niece, Rosemary Dunn and best friend, Mary Powell. Profound thanks to Aida, Sandy, Margaret, Elizabeth and KC for six years of love and care. Calling hours will be Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 2 to 5pm at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 417 S. Orchard Rd. A funeral mass will be held Monday at 10am at St. Charles Boromeo Church. Burial will be at 1:30pm at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Fayetteville. Contributions in Kathryn's honor may be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 7th North Street, Liverpool, NY 13088.
