Obituary of Sybil Grace Stobnicke

Sybil Grace Stobnicke passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 30, 2016 in the loving arms of her husband, Paul. Sybil was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1926 in Ontario, CA. She was the youngest of four children of E. May Schwietert and Charles Barnes, parents who predeceased her. Also predeceased were a sister, Patricia Milburn and 2 brothers, Lester and Charles E. Barnes. Sybil met and married her devoted husband, Paul, who was a fighter pilot at Ontario Airbase, Ontario, CA during WW2. He named his P38 fighter plane "Sweet Sybil" in her honor. She moved to Syracuse in 1947 and has lived here ever since. She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church in Syracuse.
Sybil was a graduate of Chaffee High School, Ontario, CA and the Marie Fontaine School of Modeling in Los Angeles. She had been formerly employed at Flah's Dept. Store in Syracuse. She also took post-graduate courses in art at Onondaga Community college receiving a certificate of completion with honors. Her instructors marveled at her natural inborn artistic talent and her singular, special painting technique.
Sybil has donated scores of her beautiful paintings and drawings to friends and family. She loved flowers and flower gardening. She was adept at making ceramic pottery, sewing and created hundreds of stuffed teddy bears to be given as gifts to family members and others. Sybil excelled at baking and made great delicious pies and other goodies that were enjoyed by her family and many friends. She had a special love for birds of all kinds, especially cardinals and made sure Paul kept the feeders filled.
Sybil leaves behind her loving husband of 70 years, Dr. Paul Stobnicke, two daughters, Paula (George) Ranous, Kathy Schofield and 3 sons, David Stobnicke, Michael (Ann Marie) Amante and Gary (Pamela) Stobnicke. She was loved by 12 grandchildren and 3 great- grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends, especially Mary Lang and her longest friend, Bernice Leofsky.
Sybil's family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Iroquois Nursing home for their loving care and compassion during the final difficult days of her life.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am St. Ann's Church, Onondaga Blvd on Saturday, September 3, 2016. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
