Obituary of Alice Johnston (Solan)
Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Just 18 days after the loss of her beloved husband of 65 years Alice (Allie) Solan Johnston has joined her Gussie in heaven. Allie met her future husband in the dance halls of her native Dublin where they partnered to become champion ballroom dancers. After a successful career as a waitress in the Savoy hotel in London and later in The Yates Hotel and Smorals restaurant in Syracuse, Allie retired to aid Gus in his growing tax office. Her love of family showed in many ways; mentoring Paul in his restaurant career, answering phones for Alans' part time business or fitting Irish dance shoes to Anns' students, she never failed to help her children. She was never happier than when she cooked Thanksgiving dinner (her stuffing was legendary) and family vacations to the Outer Banks were a joy she always looked forward to. Always ready with a cup of tea or a wee dram she enjoyed a steady stream of friends and family in her Tipp Hill home.
Left to cherish her memory are her sisters; May Boylen and Carmel (John) Rottkamp, brothers; Patrick and Sean (Teresa) Solan, children; Paul (Maggie Voultisos), Patrick (Ellen Van Vliet), Alan (Michelle), Sean (Erika), Ann (Eric) Sullivan, grandchildren; Michelle (Andrew) Lyons, Anthony, Courtney (Tom) Smith, Audrey, Gavin (Ashley), Emily, Fiona, Nora, Hannah, Brendan, Declan, Liam, great grandchild, Sophia, her in laws and numerous nieces and nephews who always managed to make her Irish eyes smile.
Irish Blessing… with some editing
"Do not grieve for me for I am free!
I follow the man God gave to me
I saw his face, I heard his call
I took his hand and left it all"
Gussie your Allie is ready for the dance
