Obituary of Nancy L. Sweeny

Nancy Lyons Sweeny, 87, of Syracuse passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 10, 2022 with her twin sister, Natalie at her side. She was born in Syracuse to the late Joseph F. and Florence Lyons Sweeny on June 2, 1935.  Nancy and Natalie were inseperable throughout her life.  They were lifelong residents of the valley section, and with their bright red hair they were affectionally referred to as “the twins.”  Nancy enjoyed shopping at Greenhills, dinning at Luigis and Danzers, stopping at their favorite spot, Gannons Ice Cream and their visits to Tom DeFrancisco for their weekly hair and nail treatments.

Nancy graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy in 1953.  She then began a 33+ year career with New York Telephone Company, retiring in 1987 as an executive secretary.  Nancy was an avid golfer, and enjoyed sports, especially playing basketball with her nieces and nephews.  She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers,  Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Rosary Society, enjoyed traveling with Our Lady of Lourdes Travel Group and volunteering at the rectory and fish fries. 

Nancy was predeceased by her parents, brothers, Jack and Bob, and sisters, Jane Mager and Joanne Newkirk.

She is survived by her twin sister, Natalie Rose Sweeny, special nephew, Joseph (Kelli) Sweeny and their children, Brandon, Brianna, and Joseph, and many other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 14, 2022 at 11am at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral  Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave.  Calling hours will be held from 10-11am prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
