Obituary of Matthew Burgay
We are sad to announce that Matthew Paul Burgay, 37, of Syracuse, NY, passed away unexpectedly at home on March 9, 2023.
Matt enjoyed living a simple life with his beloved cat, Chester. He was a kind, often misunderstood, soul who was taken from this world far too soon. Matt was a gentleman with a love for classical music and opera, especially the rich orchestrations of Richard Wagner. He enjoyed reading and listening to audiobooks; he often spoke of his love of Shakespeare and most classic literature. He was also an avid film buff who especially loved the movies of Ingmar Bergman, among other classic directors. Matt also enjoyed discussing philosophy, his favorite philosophers being Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. He had an inquisitive mind; in his spare time, he loved to study the science of the human body and mind and liked to share his knowledge with everyone. Matt was a true comedian with an infectious laugh who loved to make others laugh along with him. His monthly weekend visits with his twin brother, Brian, were a highlight in both of their lives and meant the world to him. During their visits, there was always a fun activity planned, like fishing, disc golfing, hiking, or some other outing. Spending every holiday with his brother was always a treat where he was loved by family and extended family alike. Matt was loved by those closest to him. We are truly heartbroken that he is gone and will miss him with all our hearts.
A private service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 at 10:00 am, in the Chapel of St. Joseph, located on the Grandview Avenue side of Most Holy Rosary Church (111 Roberts Ave, Syracuse 13207).
Matt was predeceased by his beloved mother, Theresa Burgay, his paternal grandmother, Ruth Burgay, and his maternal grandparents, George and Dorothy Willis. In addition to his twin brother Brian (Jennifer Lemon) Burgay, Matt is survived by his father, Paul (Peg Cassady) Burgay, siblings Andrea (Cory Sedlmeier) Burgay and Aegis Burgay, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a caring extended family, and his cat, Chester.
