Joan Eckermann Obituary

Joan Eckermann Obituary

Joan Cooney Eckermann, our Wild Irish Rose, joined our Creator on Friday, September 22, 2023. She died peacefully at home at the age of 93.

Joan was the loving mother of seven children; “Grammy” to fourteen grandchildren; and Great-Grammy of six. She cherished family above all and faced life with a joyous outlook and kindness for everyone she met. She loved music and dance and could be seen dancing the Charleston at many a family gathering.

Joan was born in Brooklyn and lived most of her life in Syracuse where she graduated from St. Vincent De Paul High School; modeled for Edwards Department Store; served her community as President of the Jaycettes of Syracuse; and raised her seven children with loving care and a strong faith. Joanie shared her celebratory spirit with her coworkers at Key Bank of CNY and the Catholic Diocese of Syracuse where she was the “party planner.” St. Patrick’s Day brought out Mom’s Irish. She dressed in green from head to toe and attended 38 annual parades. Every day was a celebration for Mom!

Joan is survived by her children, Carol Eckermann Donahue [Brian], Charles H. Eckermann IV [Sheila], Theresa Eckermann Pagano [Cosimo], Suzanne Eckermann Kinane [Phil], Dr. Theodore C. Eckermann [Diane]. She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore C. Eckermann and her two heavenly children, Albert and Joey.

We invite you to join us for a celebration of Joan’s life. The service will be this Friday, September 29th from 9:00-10:00 [visitation] followed by a Mass at  Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception; 259 E. Onondaga St, Syracuse, NY.
