Winnifred  "Winnie" Harrington passed away on October 25, 2023 at the age of 95.

 

Winnie was born in Long Sault, Ontario on January 9, 1928 to William and Gwendolyn Barker. She was one of eight children.  As a child, she lived on Sheeks Island in the 1000 island region of the St. Lawrence River. She loved to share stories of life on the river. Attending her one room school house, swimming in the summer, iceskating in the winter, and making maple syrup in the spring. When the shipping channel went through, her home was transported over to the mainland in Canada. Sheeks island was flooded and became one of the lost villages, now underwater. 

 

Winnie met her husband, Richard "Dick" Harrington when she and a girlfriend were hitchhiking back home from Tupper Lake, NY. Dick was a traveling salesman and offered to bring them home.They were married in 1954 and had three children. 

 

Winnie was a homemaker for most of her life. She loved to garden, can, bake cookies, and make jam. She was active in her church and an avid bridge player, she loved music and she loved to dance. Winnie took up golf when she was in her 50s and enjoyed the game into her 90s.  She had 3 hole in ones.

 

She and Dick enjoyed life together in Syracuse, NY, Fayetteville, NY, and Lady Lake, Fl. 

 

Winnie is predeceased by her parents, 7 siblings, her husband Richard (2003), and her son David Richard (1982).

 

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Michael) Ryan and her son, Todd (Laura) Harrington, 6 grandchildren, Jenna, David, Chase, Zachary, Will, and Kate, 3 great grandchildren, Estella, Elliot, and Hazel and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The family would like to thank the staff at Crouse Community Center in Morrisville for their loving care and support of Winnie.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for calling hours at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, Friday, Nov 3 from 4-6, with a service immediately following.

 

A private burial will take place on Saturday, Nov 4.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Winnie's memory to Crouse Community Center, Employee Fund, 101 South St, Morrisville,  NY 13408.
