Obituary of Edward Anthony Karpinski
Ed Karpinski passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 23, with his wife by his side. He recently celebrated his 91st birthday surrounded by family.
Born in Syracuse, NY, on March 2, 1933, Ed was a loving husband to Shirley (Kinney) for nearly 64 years. He was a devoted father to Sharon Decker (JD), Thomas (Christine Hrib), Kathleen, and Daniel. He was a caring grandfather to Zachary, Ashley Bacon (Dave), Sean Decker, and several nieces, nephews, and Godchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Vera (Podolak) and Anthony, as well as his nephew, Mark. Ed was also predeceased by his brother, Gerald, to whom Ed was both a big brother and a guiding figure.
Ed graduated from Saint Patrick’s High School in Syracuse in 1950 and Le Moyne College in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish for more than 40 years where he frequently served as an usher.
Ed was an employee of General Electric for over 35 years, where he was at the forefront of computer and radar applications. He made many lifelong friends working, mentoring, playing bridge, and having “spirited” discussions about Syracuse University sports.
Ed and Shirley enjoyed tailgating for SU sports, vacationing with friends, and hosting family 4th of July parties. Ed loved sports, whether playing, coaching, or watching. He was a standout basketball player and excelled at baseball and fast-pitch softball (where his trash talk rivaled his play). He “cherished” cold, early morning rides to Midstate Hockey, countless trips to the ball fields, and many trips to watch the grandchildren play.
Ed was an imposing figure with a soothing voice and a calming demeanor. He made friends easily, kept his four teenagers on track, and calmed small children.
Above all else, Ed was a devoted family man.
He lived a long and happy life. He will be missed by many.
Calling hours for Ed will be at Edward J. Ryan and Son funeral home on Monday, April 1, from 4:30-6:30 pm. The funeral will be at 12:30 pm at Saint Michael’s Church (Onondaga Hill) on Tuesday, April 2.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Iroquois Skilled Nursing Home for their compassion and care.
