James Leahey Smith gave his last Irish goodbye at Francis House on August 5, 2024.

Jim “Smitty” was a retired police sergeant with the Syracuse Police Department. He loved attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with family and friends especially while camping in the Adirondacks. Wherever he went he left everyone laughing and happy.

Jim is predeceased by his wives, Regina “Reggie” Stack and Margaret “Peggy” Johnson, his parents, Robert and Georgianna Smith, and his brother, Robert Smith.

He is survived by his children, Robert (Annette) Smith of Kentucky, Kristin (Rick) Reagan of Marcellus, NY, James T. (Maureen) Smith of Syracuse, Michael (Virginia) of Canandiagua, NY, Brendan (Pauline) Johnson of Brockport, Timothy (Tom King) Johnson of N.C., Marybeth (Tom) Cagney of White Plains, Kevin (Jennifer) Johnson of Syracuse, Kristen (Peter) Draveck of Saratoga, William (Marlene) Johnson of Middletown, RI and Steven Johnson of Syracuse as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday August 10, 2024 at 11am at St. Francis Xavier Church, Marcellus. Calling Hours will be held Friday August 9, 2024 from 4-7pm at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, Syracuse. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Marcellus.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Francis House.
