My wife and I would get together with Mary and Suzanne when they got to camp in the New England area. It was always a good time. She, Suzanne and their dog would always be happy camping in their trailer and share stories of their travels! She is missed by all of us! A life of beauty!

Mary was the best big sister. Ever. She was my number one fan and supporter when I started writing poetry, and the person I turned to when I needed to share a burden. Though I’ve lived away from Syracuse since I graduated from college, my weekly phone calls with Mary and frequent visits home kept us connected. I shared my life, my poetry projects, my successes and failures, with her. There will never be another Mary Austin. I’ll love her forever. I’ll think about her with every poem I write and every beautiful moment in the woods.
This photo was taken after we cleaned up post-run in our “Road and the Sky” running era.

I was so sad to read of Mary’s passing. She was an amazing human being!
Mary and I were in the “A” pattern grouping of girls’ classes at Bishop Grimes. She was extremely bright and quick witted. And was she an athlete! Not me, I was the rah, rah type.
But Mary was always kind to me and selected me to be on her basketball team during our gym class. If you recall back then, two members had to stay at the opposing team’s basket and could not cross center court. I was always one of those “non-rovers!” Yes, Mary was a great coach even back then!
The students at Onondaga Central are blessed to have had Mary as a teacher and a coach. I know she taught them life skills that many would not have received elsewhere. Her dedication in the classroom and on the field was impeccable.
We have lost a bright, shining star with the passing of Mary. She touched so many lives--including mine.

Mary will be missed. She was such an amazing person who lived quietly but in an inspirational and life affirming way. Her travels and photographs chronicled so much about her passion for life and her commitment to living the best life while walking gently upon this planet. Her humor was subtle and her grin was infectious… did I mention that she will be missed?

I got to know Mary through her wife, Suzanne. Suzanne and I were playing ukulele together. Mary came to most if not all of our performances, she was one of our biggest fans! It was so great to see her in the audience every show! Then I got to know Mary better when she and I took a music theory class together. She was so thoughtful about the class and helped me understand some of it. I so enjoyed Mary’s quiet and kind way about her!

As a high school freshman, I was fortunate to be a part of the first girls basketball team at Bishop Grimes (BG) to be coached by the legendary Barb Pfefferle. At the time, it was the only athletic activity other than cheer leading available to women. Under coach Pfeff, we played “like the boys” – no girls rules for us! – and in those first years we generally dominated our opponents! As a deadly accurate shooting guard and ballhandler, Mary was the recognized leader of the team. With the passing of Title IX, girls were allowed to play on boy’s teams in noncontact sports if there was no equivalent girl’s team in the school. For the years I was at BG, the “boy’s” tennis team consisted mainly of girls from the BB team that also played tennis – Mary, Karen Klym, and Helen White leading the way for those of us that followed. Being athletic, and actually good at sports was not yet mainstream for women in the high schools of the 1970’s. The first year we were allowed to play on the boy’s tennis team, our coach was required to survey the opposing boys regarding how they “felt” about playing against (and potentially being beaten by) a girl! Thankfully, we have come a long way since then. The nucleus of women athletes that formed that “first group” have stayed in contact all these years, often returning to Syracuse in the summer for a reunion. As noted, Mary was a quiet but observant and reflective person - when she spoke, people listened. We will miss her dearly at future reunions.
Suzanne – I have only met you a couple of times. Mary’s presence in the lives of those she touched was a true blessing. May you find comfort in the memories of your years together and the recognition that Mary is no longer suffering.

Suzanne and the Austin Family,
I am heartbroken and saddened by Mary's passing. She was my midde and high school PE teacher and varsity basketball coach. She had a huge impact on my life and went above and beyond with many of her students and athletes. She attended our cross country and track meets, she came to my college to watch me play basketball, and we re-connected after college and I joined her recreation basketball team where we played together for several years. We also got together a few times with former bball players and went out to dinner and went to an SU women's bball game. I will cherish those times and memories forever. May you take comfort in knowing that she left a lasting impression on all who knew her and may her spirit live on in all of you. My deepest condolences to you all.

To the Austin family -
Our condolences on the death of Mary. We trust you will have many happy memories to comfort you.
Carl, Sr., was our doctor for several years a long time ago when we were very young. He was one of the nicest people I’ve known (particularly in the medical community!). He was also my (John's) grandmother's (Kathryn Hennigan) doctor when she died. I recall that he actually came to the house when she passed. Of course, doctors don’t do that these days; maybe they didn’t do it often even then. But his presence made her quite peaceful death very comforting for us. Grandma always told us that we were related somehow to the Austins, but I can’t remember anymore the precise link.
Best to all of you.
Roseanne and John Hennigan

Mary was my PE teacher in middle school. She was also a favorite teacher of my mother who was the school secretary. Each Easter my mom would buy her a bag of all black jelly beans. I can’t see a bag without thinking of Mary. I also had the chance to meet her wife and we shared stories. I enjoyed seeing her hiking posts on Facebook. I am surprised and saddened by the news of her passing. I hope she meets up with my mother in the afterlife. I’m sure they will have a good time catching up. Rest in peace.
