Paul V. Mullin posted a condolence

To the family of John,
As an attorney I was worked with, against and for, John over many years. As a young attorney I feared John’s wrath if I did something he did not like, then as years passed I learned so much from John. His wisdom, humor, thoughtfulness I will miss . I miss our conversations!! May God Bless him and welcome him home!

Margaret and family my deepest and most sincere condolence for your loss.
John Ferris, An outstanding and ethical attorney respected by his peers, judges, police, community leaders and so many more. Legal counsel to numerous area Police PBA’s and organizations.
I remain thankful for his advice and direction during the early days of the Onondaga County Deputy Sheriffs’ Police Association, (O.C.S.P.A.) 30+ years ago and genuine concern for the welfare of it’s members.
His approach to contract negotiations and member concerns, at times, could be a bit unexpected. Perhaps some may say “outside the box” but, always brilliant in its execution and positive results. The kind of person and advocate that when he was in your corner, you knew it. And when not, he could be a formidable adversary.
To me, John was a loyal and trustworthy friend. I always could count on candid thoughts and scholarly debate based on fact and always available when in need.
John is an example of a life well lived and he left this world a better place. While I am sad, I can't help not
chuckling every time I think of him.
Warmest regards, Greg Duck

We will miss my father in law in too many ways to count. John was such an astoundingly kind, decent, brilliant, principled man--and reliably so, decade after decade. In many ways, he exemplified the public sensibility of the military veterans of the "Greatest Generation" era in which individuals were simply rock solid in all core ways that mattered--commitment to family and country, professionally flawless, a fabulous friend, advisor, and neighbor, a public servant from beginning to end.
His service to country alone in his top-secret role as part of the Army's post World War II military intelligence division, known as the Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC), is a chapter in his life that deserves a book. It was something to behold to see him make his way through the corridor at the Syracuse Courthouse as a crush of law enforcement folks, judges, and attorneys would make him stop so they could share warm greetings and appreciation, for his lifetime of professional standards of excellence.
From a family-oriented perspective and knowing him through my children's eyes, he was even more impressive. A great conversationalist and natural advisor, he was genuinely humble, unflappable, and funny. He was interested in (and remembered) mundane details of my girls' lives, as well as those of his eight other grandchildren. He would bond with them over their interests and passions, animals, nature, Tully Lake, horses, Latin, coffee, politics, history (He was most definitely a friend to all dogs and we tested him with many zany puppies). He would follow up on the pending issue in their lives, "how did Pinecone do at the show, did you make the CBA basketball team, which trees do you like best, how was the Irish dancing feis" etc. My girls and their cousins know they had a true and present friend in him, as did all of us. No one can argue with a life well lived to 93 years old, but we will miss him.

My uncle John was always a huge role model to me, I admired him so very much, I have nothing but respect for this wonderful man. Margaret and John played a huge part in raising me. Burkey , Chrissy and I spent many days after school at their house on Brentwood Drive a place that became a second home for us. From Margaret cutting our hair or helping me with homework or playing with their Golden retriever Brandy, we enjoyed our selves with our Aunt and Uncle no matter what we were doing. One of our favorite times was shared around the dinner table delicious food with awesome company, so many great conversation with two people who loved us so much. Those memories I will hold in my heart forever. John always wanted to know how you were doing from your health, to your job or a vacation you were going on .He gave you one on one attention and always wanted to guide you in the right direction he truly cared and wanted the best for you. To say I was blessed to have this incredible man in my life for all these years would be an understatement . I will miss him so much but will cherish every single memory we have shared together. I will especially miss us teasing each other because that’s what we like to do . You are loved by all your family and thank you John for everything you have ever done for me all threw out my life. . Rest in peace I will never forget you. Love your favorite niece ( a joke between us). Mary Cassidy

I first met John when family had hired me to help him a few hours on weekends. He was the greatest. More worried about my issues than his own. He was so funny. What a sense of humor. He was like a father in many ways. Giving me his advice. Fly free John. I will miss you.

We were lucky to have John (my uncle) for a long time. Forever to be known as the last patriarch of our large extended family. He deeply loved each and every niece and nephew, like we were his own children.
I will miss his emails, a mixed bag of tricks! It could’ve been a recommendation for a vacuum cleaner, a political commentary (his favorite), or a song of the day, something he just wanted to share with us.
Rest in peace John!

John was great fun, and good copy, when I covered local government back in the 1970s and 1980s. His membership in the Garbage Bar as he brought forward environmental concerns about a local landfill were legendary.
Only John would think to bring a bugler to play Taps when that landfill finally closed.
At true gentleman, and a man filled with stories of his time in service to his country and his fellow citizens.
Condolences to his family.
