David J. Moynihan, 59, of Syracuse passed away Friday January 9th 2015. A 1973 graduate of Anthony A. Henniger High School Dave received his degree in Business from Lemoyne College. He was licensed as a New York State CPA and credentialed as a Chartered Global Management Accountant. Dave began his accounting career in the Syracuse office of Coopers & Lybrand in 1977 after which he served as controller for Nolan Industries before joining Testone, Marshall & Discenza, CPAs in 1983 where he was the firm's Partner in Charge of Audit Services. Dave held numerous professional positions. He was a member of the board of directors of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, served as a member of AICPA Council, the Nominating Committee and as a member of the Peer Review Board. Dave held the office of President of New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and served on the Society Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Nominating Committee, Awards Committee, and as leader of the Peer Review Committee. A member of the Syracuse Chapter of NYSSCPA, he served as President, President-Elect, Treasurer and Board Member, and was instrumental in founding NYSSCPA Syracuse Career Opportunities in Accounting Profession. An appointee to NYS Quality Review Oversight Committee, Dave worked extensively on professional quality matters. As an Adjunct Professor at Lemoyne College and frequent lecturer to accounting students at SUNY Oswego and Syracuse University, he shared his passion for the CPA profession. Dave was Vice Chair of the Central New York Community Foundation, Board Member for the Centers at St. Camillus, and on the United Way of Central New York Fiscal Review Committee. He served as a board volunteer for Spanish Action League of Syracuse, Syracuse Hibernian Festival, Partners for Education in Business, and on the Syracuse Economic Development Corporation Loan Committee, the NY State Fair Advisory Board and Audit Committee, and on various committees of the NYS Government Finance Officers Association. Dave was a recipient of the St. Patrick Church Heritage Award and was honored by the Syracuse City School District Educational Foundation. An avid golfer, he was a member of Bellevue Country Club and the Golfing Cavaliers. Dave was predeceased by his parents, Bernard F. Moynihan and Jean W. Cahill – Moynihan. He was also predeceased by his father-in-law William Tillie Vatter. Dave is survived by his wife, Sara J. Moynihan, his daughter, Allison J. Moynihan, two siblings; Carole Moynihan Dalton and Alexis S. Cahill, a niece, Catherine Dalton, nephew, Colin Dalton, and his brother in law, James Vatter and sister-in-law, Shelly Vatter. A mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:00 am at St. Patrick's Church, 216 N. Lowell Ave. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt. Calling hours will be held Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 1 to 4 pm at the church.
