Douglas F. Axe, 68, passed away unexpectedly on August 26, 2014. Doug was born on May 31, 1946 in Syracuse, NY. He was a graduate of Westhill High School and attended Paul Smith's College before enlisting in the Marine Corp in 1966. Doug served two tours in Vietnam, earning the rank of Sergeant. He fought in the Tet Offensive and was awarded a silver star. Honorably discharged; Doug assumed ownership of Axe and Arthur Motor Express, an interstate trucking company founded by his father, for many years. He continued to work within the trucking industry after selling the business in the 1990's. Doug was a passionate golfer and fisherman, who loved to make anyone around him laugh. He also volunteered many hours of his time to counsel those battling addiction. Doug is survived by his daughters, Kimberly S. Cook and Deanna R.; and son, Brent D. Axe (Kristin E. Kent) ; and six granddaughters: Caitlin, Morgan, Victoria, Jordan, Meghan, and Sophie. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Dorothy; along with brothers, John and Donald, Jr. Services: Calling hours will be Monday, September 1, 2014 from 4-7pm at the Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Avenue. A celebration mass will take place Tuesday at 10am in St. Patrick's Church, 216 N Lowell Ave in Syracuse. Doug will be laid to rest at Onondaga County Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, a charity near and dear to Doug's heart. They profoundly thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and invaluable support during this extremely difficult time. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
