Matthew "Matt" Murphy of Syracuse and Stuart, Florida passed away on December 24, 2014, after a brief illness, surrounded by family at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born in Ashford, Ireland on February 17, 1924, he graduated from the Christian Brothers School in County Cork. He came to America in his early 20's and lived with his Aunt and cousins here in Syracuse. Matt retired after almost 40 years at Niagara Mohawk. Matt was a long-time member of St. Ann's Parish in Syracuse. He enjoyed staying physically active, playing handball and golf for many years. Matt always had a kind word and warm Irish smile for all he loved and befriended. He was predeceased by the love of his love, wife, Dode Murphy and son, David Murphy. Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law, Maureen (John) Lavigne, son and daughter-in-law, Kevin (Lori) Murphy and son, Tim Murphy, six grandchildren, Sean Murphy, Erin (Pete) O'Brien, Brian Lavigne, Bridget (Jarod) Chapko, Greg (Val) Lavigne and Ryan Murphy, two great grandchildren, Brielle and Adlee Chapko, and one sister, Joan Reilly of Chicago. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Monday, December 29, 2014, at St. Ann's Church on Onondaga Blvd., Syracuse. Calling hours are Sunday from 1 to 4 pm at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. The family would like to thank all of the talented and caring medical staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse for not only taking care of Matt but also his family during this difficult time. Contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North St., Syracuse, NY 13088.
