Obituary of John P. Cavanaugh

John P. Cavanaugh, the lion punching, alligator taunting, derby pranking, Watkins Glen skydiving survivor legend passed away on Monday surrounded by his loved ones. He attended Kent State University and was a retired Syracuse City fire fighter and World Trade Center 1st Responder. He was an active aviator and sky diver with a unique zest for life. He truly lived each day of his life to the fullest with a deep devotion for his children and grandchildren. Equally important to his family were his extensive group of friends who meant the world to him. John is survived by his three daughters, Caroline, Jacqueline and Kayleigh Cavanaugh of Syracuse, NY; grandchildren, Mia and Connor; sister, Dr. Sandra Chase (Warren) of Brooklyn, NY; brothers, Thomas (Susan) of Homestead, FL and Brian Cavanaugh of Syracuse, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 9:30am at Most Holy Rosary Church, 111 Roberts Ave. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7pm at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Most Holy Rosary School: 1031 Bellevue Ave. Syracuse, NY 13207.
