Obituary of John "Doc" Joiner
John “Doc” Joiner, 79, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully at his home on November 7, 2018 after his courageous battle with cancer. He was a 35+ years employee of Le Moyne College, dedicated alumnus of Pebble Hill High School and a life long supporter of Elmcrest Children Center. Doc was always supporting others in need as shown throughout his life with the Eastwood Bears Pop Warner Football teams in the early days, to his tireless support for Le Moyne College Athletics.
He was Le Moyne’s first athletic trainer from 1977 to 1986, assisting in solidifying it as a budgeted position for the future. For his outstanding loyalty, dedication, and service to Le Moyne College Athletics and its student athletes, Doc received both, the Gold Wave “Dolphin” Award in 1996 and the “Bene Merenti” recognition award in 1999. He retired fulltime from Le Moyne in 2008 as equipment manager after countless hours of faithful service and continued working part-time until 2015. In recognition for all he has done, Le Moyne dedicated the equipment room in his honor as “Doc’s Place” and now call the annual homecoming weekend, the “John ‘Doc’ Joiner Homecoming Weekend.”
Doc is predeceased by his parents, Carlton “Link” and Christine “Peg,” and his brother, Jerry. He is survived by his lifetime friend, Ron Messina, the Messina family and fellow classmates, “The Lunch Brunch.”
Doc and his friends would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Brookdale East and UpState Hospital for their love and compassionate care over the last few years.
A Memorial Mass in Doc’s honor will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2pm at the Panasci Family Chapel at Le Moyne College; 1419 Salt Springs Rd, Syracuse, NY. Doc will be buried alongside his parents in a private ceremony in Tioga Cemetery in Owego, NY.
