Bill and I served together at Letterman Army Medical Center. He was a surgical resident and I an or nurse. I hated to be on call with him. We seemed to work all night long!!! Bill was fun and he was knowledgeable. I always laugh about my last night on call at Letterman, you guessed it he was on call as well! Fortunately we didn’t operate all night, but he had a crazy situation in the surgical clinic and of course he called me. He was looking for instrument that would allow him to remove a foreign body and not take the patient to the OR. He also didn’t want to call chief resident. He and I laughed most of the night after the problem was resolved. Just the nicest person in the world. I guess God needed another angel. My memories of Bill will never fade. Just the best. Godspeed Rest in eternal peace

Dr Marx was the kindest brightest surgeon I have ever met in my 30 plus year career as a physician. I had the profound privilege of training with him when he was at St Elizabeth’s Trauma Center in Utica in my first two years of residency before he left for Upstate. I would occasionally talk to him over a patient case through the years and he would always ask how things were here in Northern NY and always immediately knew who I was. He was so humble. I will never forget being in trauma code with him. No matter how bad the situation you felt calm because he was. He knew exactly what to do and did it flawlessly. It was such an honor to know him. That was a beautiful service for a beautiful man. I recall those early years when Bill, Howie, and others forged a challenging path to build a trauma service, not just for Upstate, but for our region and beyond. The parallel path of building the specialty of emergency medicine brought us all together as colleagues with a common bond and a shared goal. Bill was determined, calm and humble in his leadership. We were so sorry to hear of Dr. Marx's passing.
My wife and I were Medical Device reps with Johnson and Johnson and called on him for a number of years. He was always willing to speak with us, support training, and education initiatives with his fellows. During the early days of laparoscopy, he pioneered the Lap Nissen procedure in Upstate NY.
He was always fair and respectful.

So very sorry to learn of Dr. Marx's passing. I knew him as a CBA parent and as a collaborator on a start-up concept for a device to detect infectious disease. He brought a wealth of insight, intelligence and overall value. It is hard to lose a person of such talent, character and charm, so I begin to appreciate how hard it is for his loved ones.
This isn't an empty platitude for this loss - " You dramatically miss those things of great value that you've lost."

I’m so sorry about the lost of this wonderful man. I retired from Upstate several years ago but remember Bill very well.
Very friendly and helpful even during great stress, (working trauma in ICU). He had great insight and I would have chosen him as the surgeon that I most admired. I loved his smile, his humor and his personality. He touched many, I’m glad to have been able to call him a friend. We’ve lost a great man.
