Susan was my high school English teacher and as such had tremendous impact on my life. One day she asked about my college applications, and told me that my list was not ambitious enough. She encouraged me to apply to the school where I ended up going, that opened so many doors for me. She encouraged me to love reading. Most important, she taught me how to write. The only way to learn to write is to open yourself to feedback, to want to do better, and then repeat until you get it right. It's a difficult process, and she encouraged and supported me throughout.
I lost touch with her after I graduated from college, and was sad to hear of her passing when, out of the blue, I decided to google her this morning.
