Dear Mastin Family,
Deepest sympathies to you all from Valerie and me for Uncle Jim's passing.
Wish we could be there to lend our understanding and encouragement in person, as well as express our thanksgiving at having been blessed to know and enjoy the company of your Dad, and Mom over so many years.
Please know we are there with you in Spirit.
Missing being there, and feeling less than enthused about a golf tournament I had committed too this past Monday I almost decided not to go but knowing that I was being counted on I showed up.
On the second hole the other cart in our foursome got in front of us and as we were pulling up to the tee box what do I see hanging from a golf bag ?
A well used, dingy orange Syracuse University golf towel !
A smile immediately came to my face, my mood immediately lifted as I leaned forward shaking my head a little, the guy sitting next to me asking if something was wrong, to which I told him "no everything is fine now" .
Long story short, the guy was born and raised in Fayetteville, and a lifelong SU fan and every hole we played after that, one of us had something new to bring up about home, " State Fair, Green Lakes, Liverpool , have they done anything with the old Central Tech building, SU, and on, and on it went. I felt like I was there. He said he was sorry to hear about your dad as well .
We exchanged numbers and plan on getting together on our own and playing in the future .
I've been playing golf here for over 20 years and this was the first time I ever met someone not only from that close to home but displaying SU gear so that I would know to ask him about himself.
18 foursomes out there that day and he just happened to be in mine.
The compounded probability of it all happening as it did the day after I learned of Uncle Jim's passing still stuns me to think of.
It was a tournament dedicated to Uncle Jim in my mind.
I don't believe in coincidences, but in a Heavenly Father whose eye is on the sparrow and who cares constantly of bringing us through our difficult times and circumstances.
Keeping You All Earnestly In Our Prayers . Love Mike & Valerie

I only know Jim Mastin by knowing his son, Jim, with whom I work work closely at Boston College. His son is smart and generous and full of faith. He typically puts his own needs second to those whom he serves at the university. He loves being a dad, often speaks endearingly of his mother and father and his trips to Syracuse to be with family. They say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Well, Jim Mastin (RIP) must have been a wonderful tree because it’s fruit is very impressive. Fr. Tony Penna, University Chaplain, Boston College.

We are so sorry for your loss. My husband and I worked with Jim for many years at SU. He was a man of integrity, was highly respected, caring, and had a great sense of humor. How we enjoyed his dry sense of humor! He was a wonderful mentor and friend, and we will always cherish the fond memories that still make us smile.
With love and sympathy,
Marc and Camille Donabella
