Obituary of Katherine Flack
Kathy Flack, 74, of Syracuse passed away Saturday August 19th at her home. She was born in Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York, to Marjorie and James Flack. Kathy has been a resident of the Syracuse area since 1971.
Kathy graduated from SUNY Cortland and began her physical education career at Henninger High School. She taught there for nearly 40 years, retiring in 2010.
Kathy was a lifelong athlete, coach, golfer, sports fan and feminist, who was never shy with letting others know how she felt. She loved to bike, golf, run, and was a member of the women’s senior softball team at the Empire games, as well as city recreational teams. Kathy loved the outdoors and spending time in nature. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends. She will be remembered by those close to her as a fiercely loyal, considerate and steadfast friend.
Kathy was a dedicated member of the SUNY Cortland community where she was honored as Alumna of the year in 2008. As an enthusiastic member of the Arethusa Sorority (SIGMA GAMMA PHI) she still remained friends with many of her “sisters” and still looked forward to their annual trips to Raquette Lake. All are thrilled that she was able to attend in July 2023.
Her causes were many, including Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina, and numerous bike rides and fundraisers to help those in need. Kathy was a passionate Syracuse sports fan (men and women’s) and a dedicated sister, aunt and friend.
Kathy is survived by her sister Betsy (John Cherundolo), and brother Bill Flack (Jamie). She’s also survived by her nieces and nephews; Allison Cherundolo-Holt (Michael), Leanne Cherundolo and J.C. Cherundolo, Betsy Baird (Rob), Jamie Flack (Teresa) and their daughter Gia.
Visitation and remembrance will be Monday August 28th from 10AM-11:30AM with a service at 11:30am at the Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave, Syracuse NY, 13219.
